Hey, Margo here! For my first blog post, I'm going to talk about my trip to Bone Valley! There was araffle to go on this truip to the Peace River and i was dying for some adventure, so I entered. My name was picked first, but had wrong info on it, so I was put on the waiting list. Soon, more spots opened up for the trip and I got to go! So I packed up my stuff and head off on my journey onto the charter bus...
The morning of the trip I walked into school with my bags and dropped them off in the media center, then I walked out and said goodbye to all of my friends(there were many hugs) and at 8:20am I boarded the bus.
The bus was pretty much empty when I got on. Juan and Jacob were sitting in a seat together(they're like two peas in a pod, best friends) so I decided to sit in the seat next to them. Jacob said, "Boys only!" but I sat there anyways and later Matt and Craig sat in front of me, Sophie next to me, and Avalon behind. That way I can lean over Sophie to talk to Juan and Jacob the whole trip and put my head through the seat in front to talk to Matt and Craig. Perfect seating!
First Stop a lame museum where I got creamed at checkers and then back on the bus and to the forest for a nature walk! Poison Ivy EVERYWHERE! Beautiful trees, exotic plants, Alligators, multicolored moss! It looked EXACTLY like Forks(Twilight!) Sophie and I sat and ate jelly sanwiches(they forgot the peanut butter) and salad in our fantasy forks and then layed back and pretended we were in Edward Cullens arms running throught the forest on the bus ride to camp.
We stopped at the river next. Just for some pre-fossiling. At first it looked pretty gross compared to the paradise river I was thinking of: It was under a highway and there was garbage in the water. We treked through alot of mud(girls yelling,"Eww! Gross! -squeal-!")and then we got to the river. I started out in a group with Cory and Kirsten but then switched to Rachel, Sophie, and a girl who I can't remember her name. I found a few sting ray barbs and got great pictures of me and friends and then we started back to the bus.
Back to the bus wasn't the best experience for me. First there was this log covered in red ants and I jumped over it and then a few steps later, I felt a familiar(when i was little I stepped in a red ant pile) pinching sensation on my feet and stopped dead in my tracks. "Keep walking Margo!" "I can't! I've been bitten by red ants and I'm alergic!" I stumbled back to the lake to wash my swolen red blobs I used to call feet off of the dead red ant guts. I leaned over to check out the damage and when I lifted my head back up I hit it against the counsler's(Lutah) head! Ow! It felt like hitting my head against a brick wall! It still hurts and it's been a week! As I dizzily walked back, I stepped into a sink hole and got stuck. I grabbed onto a shovel and pushed myself out and as a took another step i got even more stuck! Lutah got me out but my shoe was lost and once it was recovered I was way behind the others! I called out, "Matt! Craig!" and caught upto them as they led the way back to the busses. We changed in the busses and were put into groups:Me, Matt, Craig, Sophie, and Avalon were the Herons, in charge of snacks, and our whole side of the bus was the Hawks. Then we headed for camp.
Once we arrived at Camp Sparta, we unloaded our bags and divided into cabins. There was the boys cabins, the girls cabins, and dogs in between. Yikes! My cabin was me, Ilani, Jordan, Briana, Avalon, Sophie, and a girl who's name I forgot. We were in cabin 2 and we were supervised by Ms. Amedee. Once we all showered and got dressed(in our pj's) we headed to dinner: Spagetti, garlic bread, salasd, grean beans, and the best cake I've ever tasted! Yum! After that, it was time for the campfire!
The campfire was probably one of the best experiences I've ever had! We all sat down on the beach around the fire. It was dry season, so it was illegal to have an open fire. Ours was small and in a silver dish, but still kept warm and toasty in the cold air. Lutah and our other counsler, Kai, sang a song by a mother bear to it's baby about the Earth(you'll see it later in this blog post) as we thought of an animal we were connected to that would be our spirit animal. Mine was a Red Fox. Then, we played a game using the spirit animals that I won. Since I was one of the winners, I got to eat s'mores first(I ate the chocolate only since I can't eat marshmallows) and choose someone to get them first, too. I chose Matt. After Marshmallows, I grabbed a flashlight and the boys ans I told funny scary stories(One that I told,"One there was a school called Bak MSOA" Juan: "And then Ms. Karvonen came out! Ahhhhhhhh!") and then we got back in the circle. I sat next to Matt and Avalon sat behind me and rested her head on my shoulder while Lutah told a REAL scary story that was true and about the very camp we were at!
Once there was this guy(Ms, Amedee calls him Crazy Jim) who took care of the camp. He was a very good caretaker until one day he was fixing something on the roof of a cabin and he fell landing on him knee caps and loosing mobility of them forever. He still took care of the camp and one day a woman got in a car crash while driving into Camp Sparta and she shattered her knee caps. The man thought that this was no coincidence and started telling all of the kids that the camp is cursed and the camp owners had to let him go. One day, the campers saw lights dancing around so they called the police and the police found the man(Crazy Jim) in the forest. The police found out that he was trying to dig up an indian burial ground and take out their knee caps, lifting the curse. After putting the man in the mental hospital in which he still is in today, Lutah and Kai started seeing weird things, too. Random red lights that disapear when people notice them and all kinds of things.
After that, everyone seperated and ran to there cabins squealing, "He's going to get your kneecaps!" I was first to my cabin, Avalon following behind me, and then the rest of the girls. Once Ms. Amedee got there, we started a little talent show and if you performed, she gave you chocolate! I performed twice(Yum!) and then Ms. Amedee imitated Bon Qui Qui! We all started cracking up! Avalon didn't know what Bon Qui Qui was, so, using Ms. Amedee's iPhone, we watched Youtube videos, including Bon Qui Qui, Fred, and a video called My Pet Pickle that a girl who goes to our school was in, for the rest of the night. We stayed up untill about 2am and then we crashed.
The next day, we woke up to an annoying phone alarm at about 6am, "WAKE UP, WAKE UP, WAKE UP" which dropped from the top bunk of a bed, making it a while untill it got shut off. We got out of bed, got dressed, packed our bags, and headed to breakfast. We ate bagels, poptarts and mini-muffins and then it was back to the bus and onto canoeing!
Canoeing had to be another one of the greatest experiences ever. We got to the canoeing outpost and got our life jackets,(which were big and puffy) then it was onto another bus which brought us to our starting point on our 4.2 mile trip down the peace river. Now THIS was my paradise river I was imagining! I was one of the most beautiful things I had every seen! We were given a quick lesson on the basics of canoeing and captains were chosen. I was in a canoe with Matt(Captain), Craig, and Avalon, making us the only group with four people. We grabbed our fossiling gear, our canoe equipment, chose our canoe(the first one) and we were off.
Avalon paddled first, then Craig got a turn and then me. Paddling was hard work, I don't know how Matt did it the whole time! We crashed alot and then we had our first fossiling stop. Craig found a HUGE shark tooth(the biggest anyone found!) and I found a tiny one(the smallest anyone found!) Then we were off in our canoes again switching places paddling and taking pictures. I ran out of pictures on my camera fast which upset me(It was so beautiful!) a bit. Finally we hit a second stop and then a stop for snacks. I didn't eat while everyone else did, I was too busy fossiling. Then we got back on our canoes and fell WAY behind. Kai caught up with us and we all sang the Earth song together the whole way back. Once we got off the canoes I was FREEZING! I can't even tell you how cold I was! Stick your hand in ice water for 5 minutes and I felt like that for an hour! Even after I changed! Every movement in my leg felt like crackling ice cubes! When I finally warmed up enough to speak without just,"jgejobrbrbrrrrrrreoufce" coming out, I joined in with lunch. We had the same as the day before(but they brought the peanut butter this time) and then we boarded the bus(AGAIN) and headed back to school.
On our way back, those who weren't asleep(I was for at least a few minutes) watched Jurassic Park and then made necklaces out of the shark teeth we found. Juan and i played a two-player game of tap Tap Revenge on his iPhone and then we got back to school, unloaded our things and waited for our parents to pick us up.
